Robert Kirkman and Marc Silvestri's Hardcore comic book series is being adapted into a movie by Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Wingard has signed on to direct the Hardcore film for Universal, drawing from a story outline by Kirkman. Wingard will co-pen the movie's script with Will Simmon, an up and coming screenwriter who's worked on Paramount's developing reboots of Sleepy Hollow and Internal Affairs.

Hardcore originated as a one-shot comic that Kirkman, Silvestri and artist Brian Stelfreeze created for Top Crow's 2010 pilot season, prior to being revived by Kirkman's Image Comics in 2018. The story takes place in a world where government agents have access to a newfound technology that allows them to take control of other peoples' bodies like a drone and use them to assassinate their targets. Its its article, The Hollywood Reporter describes the Hardcore film adaptation as "a sci-fi thriller following a soldier’s journey as he saves the world without getting his hands dirty."

In addition to Godzilla vs. Kong, Wingard is best known for helming the cult horror/thrillers You're Next (2013) and The Guest (2014), along with the not-so-beloved Blair Witch (2016) and the 2017 live-action film adaptation of Death Note. He is also attached to direct Face/Off 2 for Paramount and is developing a live-action ThunderCats movie with his longtime writing partner Simon Barrett. On top of all that, Wingard is reportedly in early talks to helm the next MonsterVerse film, with Son of Kong being floated a a potential title.

Kirkman, in many ways, has been equally busy, in terms of his recent movie and TV output. Besides outlining the Hardcore film adaptation, he's currently serving as the showrunner on Amazon Prime's animated series adaptation of his Invincible comic books. Following the critical and viewership success of Season 1, Amazon has gone ahead and renewed Invincible for Seasons 2 and 3.

Outside the realm of comic books and superheroes, Kirkman also wrote the pitch for Universal's Renfield, a horror/comedy about Dracula's put-upon familiar. "It's a story about [Renfield] being Dracula's henchman and how shitty a job that is," said Kirkman in a recent update. "It's a fun, extremely violent comedy, because I've got a crutch and it's violence."
