Director Christopher Landon revealed his ideas for a third film in the Happy Death Day franchise, including the working title.

Landon spoke with Empire about the potential for a threequel, confirming the title would be Happy Death Day To Us should it be made. "I wrote the idea for the third movie some time ago," Landon shared. "I think we're all excited by it, because it's different than the other two films, and so we're really just crossing our fingers and hoping that our fanbase continues to grow." Luckily, the film isn't as time-sensitive as its predecessors. "The idea for the third film is not set in the same day," Landon explained. "We're not up against a really difficult clock right now. The other movies were hard, because they were set in the exact same day, so everybody had to look the same, be the same. The pressure is off there."

The first film follows Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) as she relives her birthday on an infinite time loop, forever ending in her demise unless she can figure out who the killer is. The sequel takes place on the same day that Tree finds herself in a multi-dimensional universe due to a mess of quantum mechanic blunders at the hands of her love interest's roommate.

The original Blumhouse production, Happy Death Day, was released in 2017 and immediately became a cult classic thanks to its Groundhog's Day premise and infectiously dark humor. In addition to its unexpected appeal, the horror flick raked in a surprising $125.5 million worldwide with only a $4.8 million budget. The film's sequel, Happy Death Day 2U, was released in 2019. It was held to equally high regard, this time paying tribute to Back to the Future through a time-traveling plot twist.
