Hansel & Gretel's Tommy Wirkola to Direct Afterburn Adaptation

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters director Tommy Wirkola is set to helm Relativity Media's adaptation of Afterburn, the  2008 adventure from Red 5 Comics, Heat Vision reports. 300's Gerard Butler is attached to star.

Written by Red 5 co-founders Scott Chitwood and Paul Ens and illustrated by Wayne Nichols, the four-issue miniseries is set in a future where solar flares have left half planet a wasteland populated by mutants and pirates. Buried beneath the ash and rubble of the quarantine zone are treasures like the Mona Lisa, the Rosetta Stone and the Crown Jewels. Enter Jake and his team of recovery experts, who'll brave rogue armies, rival treasure hunters, pirates and mutants to retrieve the precious items ... for the right price.

Wirkola, who made a name for himself with the 2009 Norwegian horror film Dead Snow, will also rewrite the earlier screenplay by Matt Johnson (Torque). Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) was previously attached to direct.

Neal Moritz, Toby Jaffe, Tobey Maguire and Ryan Kavanaugh are producing. Butler's involvement will hinge on the movie's scheduling.
