Hannibal's Mads Mikkelsen dishes on how Season 3 almost ended.

While many Hannibal fans hoped to see the show end with greater physical intimacy between Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen) and Will (Hugh Dancy), the series finale instead had a Thelma & Louise-like twist, showing the two embracing while falling off a cliff. However, Mikkelsen told Vulture that the show almost ended with the entangled duo's kiss.

When asked if Hannibal and Will were in a romance, Mikkelsen replied, "Yeah, but not necessarily something that would become physical."

While discussing the duo's choice to murder Francis Dolarhyde (Richard Armitage) together as a form of metaphorical consummation, he stated, "This is the ultimate way to love someone in his world, to eat them -- right? We actually did a couple of takes of the very last scene where we were looking at each other, and it was a little too obvious -- it was almost a kiss. Me and Hugh were like, 'Why not? We have a couple of takes. Let’s do one. It might be cool.'"

However, the pair never ended up kissing.

Mikkelsen shared, "Never went for the kiss. Bryan loved it, but he was like, 'Too much, guys. It’s too obvious.' And he was absolutely right. But I think we were just stuck on that. And a lot of the Fannibals wanted it as well. It’s been a subject of homoerotic fan art. And for good reason, because they are so united as twins in many ways. But we never wanted it to be a physical thing. It was something much bigger than that."

Ultimately, the Hannibal star stated that the show decided to focus on Season 3's ending with watching Will and Hannibal experience the same feeling of killing someone and "both having the same sensation" about it.

In January 2021, Mikkelsen announced that talks for a potential Season 4 of Hannibal were being had, stating, "[Now that the series] has found a new home on Netflix, the talks have been revitalized… I don’t think you’d find a member of the cast that is still alive that would say, 'No, thanks.' We all enjoyed it tremendously."

Hannibal stars Mads Mikkelsen, Hugh Dancy, Caroline Dhavernas, Laurence Fishburne, Scott Thompson, Aaron Abrams, Gillian Anderson and Hettienne Park. All three seasons are currently streaming on Netflix.
