Hulu recently dropped a new trailer for Season 5 of The Handmaid's Tale, bringing audiences the epic confrontation between June and the forces of Gilead the series has been building toward for years.
The clip offers a glimpse at the aftermath of Season 4's brutal finale, in which the former Handmaids of Gilead, now trying their best to live normal lives, gathered together and murdered Commander Waterford. Now it's June and the now-widowed Serena Waterford hurtling toward an intense confrontation.
Season 4 of The Handmaid's Tale saw Commander Waterford brought to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to answer for his crimes. However, June discovers a deal in the works that may result in the Commander getting the charges dismissed. More than that, it appeared he was about to get away to Geneva and potentially get immunity. Seeing no other option, Fred kidnaps and delivers Waterford to No Man's Land, where June and a handful other Gilead survivors chase him down and kill him.
But while many of the Handmaids are set to return in the upcoming season, at least one of them won't. Earlier this year, it was announced star Alexis Bledel, who plays Emily, also known as Ofglen, had departed the series. She stated, "After much thought, I felt I had to step away from 'The Handmaid’s Tale' at this time. I am forever grateful to Bruce Miller for writing such truthful and resonant scenes for Emily, and to Hulu, MGM, the cast and crew for their support."
Based on Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel of the same name, Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale was created by Bruce Miller and takes place in a dystopian future following a Second American Civil War. In this future, a totalitarian society named Gilead, forces fertile women to become Handmaids-- its answer to falling fertility rates. The handmaids are forced to serve men and bear children. The Hulu show stars Elisabeth Moss, Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Madeline Brewer, Ann Dowd, O. T. Fagbenle, Max Minghella, Samira Wiley, Amanda Brugel and Bradley Whitford.
Since it premiered in 2017, the show has generally earned positive reviews, with many praising Moss' performance, as well as the powerful storytelling. It has gone on to win a number of accolades including eight Primetime Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe.
Season 5 of The Handmaid's Tale is scheduled to premiere on Sept. 14.
