John Carpenter discussed whether the next entry in the Halloween franchise, Halloween Kills, will debut on a streaming service instead of a theatrical release.

"Sure, Halloween may be shared that way because theatres are dead," Carpenter told NME. "It’s just the reality right now," he added. "And it’s a tragedy, but it’s true. We just have to face it. The studio did contact David and I, and they had us put off [Halloween Kills' release date] by a year in the hope that things got better. So we’re still hoping it will get better."

In response to Warner Bros. premiering their 2021 slate of movies on HBO Max, Carpenter noted, "These guys are making decisions that they consider in their best interests. This is what they see the future is going to be like... They think this is the best way to do it."

Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends are the last two planned films within the Michael Myers-led franchise. Both upcoming Halloween films are directed by 2018's Halloween director David Gordon Green.

Directed by David Gordon Green and written by Green, Danny McBride, Paul Brad Logan and Chris Bernier, Halloween Kills stars Curtis, Andi Matichak and Judy Greer. The film arrives in theaters on Oct. 15.
