Master Chief is finally making the jump to the small screen. After years of rumors, cable network Showtime has officially ordered a scripted drama based on Microsoft's uber-popular video game series, Halo.

Entertainment Weekly reports that the project has received the greenlight and that 10 episodes have already been ordered, with Awake's Kyle Killen serving as executive producer, showrunner and writer. Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt will also executive produce the series, while also serving as director for multiple episodes.

David Nevins, CEO and President of Showtime, spoke to the ambitious nature of the upcoming sci-fi series: "Halo is our most ambitious series ever, and we expect audiences who have been anticipating it for years to be thoroughly rewarded," he said. "In the history of television, there simply has never been enough great science fiction. Kyle Killen’s scripts are thrilling, expansive and provocative, Rupert Wyatt is a wonderful, world-building director, and their vision of Halo will enthrall fans of the game while also drawing the uninitiated into a world of complex characters that populate this unique universe."

We don't yet know if the series will adapt the story of one of the Halo games in particular, but thanks to an early description of the series, we do know that it will follow the broad story of the Halo universe. The series will feature "an epic 26th-century conflict between humanity and an alien threat known as the Covenant … Halo will weave deeply drawn personal stories with action, adventure and a richly imagined vision of the future."
