Dataminers reportedly uncovered audio in the upcoming shooter Halo Infinite which suggests the game may feature a battle royale mode.

The datamined audio file, discovered in Halo Infinite's multiplayer beta, is short and sweet, consisting of just two words spoken by veteran Halo announcer Jeff Steitzer: "Battle Royale." Steitzer's voice is iconic in the Halo franchise as the actor not only states the game mode at the beginning of any multiplayer match but frequently chimes in to congratulate players on their "Double Kill," "Triple Kill" or "Killimanjaro."

The voice file itself was posted to Vocaroo, a website dedicated to hosting brief audio clips. The voice is unmistakably that of Steitzer as he very explicitly states "Battle Royale." The voice line is taken out of context, so it's possible it could be referring to something that isn't a game mode. It's also reasonable to assume that the audio file is an unused asset that may have at one point been intended for Halo Infinite but was cut from the game.

The battle royale genre has exploded in popularity in recent years, fueled by the success of PUBG: Battlegrounds and Fortnite. While the game mode has seen considerable success, many players have grown weary of it. Battle royale modes generally see around 100 players dropping into an open map where they are tasked with scavenging weapons and armor in order to eliminate all their opponents. The last surviving player or squad is the winner.

While the Halo franchise sports a wide variety of multiplayer modes, including Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag, a battle royale mode has never officially been included in a Halo game. While it's unconfirmed that such a mode will be included in Infinite, 343 Industries will likely share more information at a later date.

While Halo Infinite's closed multiplayer beta test may have concluded, fans of Master Chief don't have to wait very long to experience the full game. Microsoft has confirmed that Halo Infinite will launch in 2021 for Xbox Series X, Xbox One and PC.
