Five years since the release of Halo 5: Guardians on the Xbox One, Master Chief is back front and center to continue the fight in Halo Infinite for the Xbox Series X later this year.

As part of Microsoft's showcase for major video games coming to its next-generation console the Xbox Series X this holiday season, eight minutes of footage from Infinite's main story mode campaign was unveiled to the public. Ominously opening with the title card "167 days after we lost," Master Chief and his pilot crash land on a rocky, forest landscape, with the Spartan warrior departing to disable Covenant anti-aircraft cannons.

Many of the familiar hallmarks of the fan-favorite first-person shooter franchise, from various weaponry, recharging armor shields and a spin in the all-terrain vehicle the Warthog, make an appearance. The video ends with a montage of clips as Master Chief finds a holographic recording of the Banished, a splinter faction from the Covenant, taunting him over humanity's losses as John discovers a broken Halo ring.

Described as a spiritual reboot and continuation of the Reclaimer storyline that began with 2012's Halo 4, Halo: Infinite has been in development since 2015. The game centers on Master Chief as he leads the fight to save humanity while the artificial intelligence program Cortana continues to descend into villainy against her old friend.

Developed by 343 Industries and SkyBox Labs, Halo Infinite will be released for the Xbox Series X during the 2020 holiday season.
