The final trailer for Halloween Kills has been released, and it paints a grim picture for the upcoming cinematic holiday. Michael Myers is back to wreak even more havoc than he did three years ago, though there seems to be some clarification as to why he's on a killing spree. In the new trailer, Michael's path creates a trail that leads back to where he experienced his infamous first kill.

Of course, this explanation for Michael's massacre is different from the previous one, which involves a controversial retcon involving Laurie Strode. Here's a look at how this change altered the series before the 2018 reboot, as well as why Michael's kills seem to all stem from his first.

In the first Halloween, final girl Laurie Strode is a neighborhood girl who's caught in the crossfire of the many killings that Michael Myers engages in. This changes in the second movie, however, when it's revealed that Laurie was adopted and she's, in fact, the biological sister of Michael Myers. This explains why Michael targets her and why he keeps coming back to Haddonfield in the sequels, as he seeks to kill the rest of his family.

Many saw the second Halloween as the beginning of a downward spiral for the franchise, though, with some fans pointing to the needless retcon of Laurie and Michael's relationship as both poorly done and a way for sequels to continue to bring the character back. And strangely enough, this concept would be reused in Rob Zombie's reboot of the series.

Halloween Kills' Infamous Location

Myers House from Halloween Kills

The new reboot removed the idea of Michael and Laurie being siblings, treating the first film where they were still considered unrelated as the only canon story. Now, the idea created in the newest movie's trailer suggests that it isn't Laurie drawing Michael to Haddonfield but Michael's old house. This, of course, was where he first killed his true older sister Judith at the beginning of the original movie, with the rest of that movie taking place 15 years later.

Halloween Kills takes place 40 years later, with many of Michael's apparent victims being characters he interacted with in the original. All of this trails back to Michael's house, which calls out to him in some way or another. After all, he did come back to the exact neighborhood slaughter innocents in both the original movie and the 2018 film, so the idea that the area where he grew up is somehow influencing him makes sense within established canon. Why exactly it's driven him to kill still isn't explained, but whatever the reason is, the iconic domicile certainly has something to do with why Michael Myers' murderous mayhem continues.

To see how Michael's killing spree connects to his home, Halloween Kills slashes its way into theaters and Peacock on Oct. 15.
