A remaster of Half-Life 2 and its subsequent episodes is reportedly in development, with Valve's blessing. The fan-made project, first identified by notable video game leaker Tyler McVicker, will reportedly remaster Half-Life 2 alongside Episode 1 and Episode 2. The development team behind the project is the same fan group that produced Half-Life 2: Update, a free patch to the game which introduced an overhauled lighting system, countless bug fixes and enhanced particle effects and fog system.Related: Half-Life 2 Still Holds Up as One of the Best Video Games of All Time

While the game was initially leaked via a listing in Steam Database, McVickers has since confirmed that it does exist. "I have been able to confirm this projects legitimacy, being made by the former Half-Life 2: Update team," reads the follow-up tweet. There's currently no release date for Half-Life 2: Remastered Collection, but McVickers does state that it will arrive "soon."

Whether this project amounts to an update for the original series of games or a brand new release remains unknown. Valve has previously shown that it is open to developers iterating on the Half-Life franchise, with the commercial release of Black Mesa, a fan-made mod of the first game in the series.

The Half-Life franchise is widely regarded as one of the most iconic video game series of all time. An immersive first-person shooter, the games cast the player as Gordon Freeman, a scientist in a dystopian world attempting to survive hostile aliens, killer zombies and a fascist state. Half-Life 2 is most notable for revolutionizing in-game physics, implementing a system that allowed objects to interact with one another in a realistic fashion.

While Half-Life and Half-Life 2 are both playable by today's standards, they have aged visually. It's currently unknown what features the Remastered Collection will overhaul but improved textures, enhanced lighting and updated character models will likely make the list.

If you want to understand all the fuss around Half-Life 2, you'll be able to find the games on a range of platforms, including Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but it's easiest to find the game on PC via Steam. The most recent entry in the franchise is Half-Life: Alyx a VR game that focuses on fan-favorite character Alyx Vance.
