New statistics reveal the front-loaded box office success of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

According to Twitter user @GiteshPandya of Box Office Guru, the Sam Raimi-directed Marvel Cinematic Universe entry finished its domestic theatrical run with a total of $411.3 million. The opening weekend total of $187.4 million accounted for 46 percent of the movie's cumulative domestic earnings.

On its second Friday in May, Multiverse of Madness dropped 81 percent from its opening day gross a week prior. This steep drop established the box office trajectory for the 28th film in the MCU, which nears the end of its worldwide run with $954.8 million at the time of writing. However, the film was not released in key theatrical territories such as China and Saudi Arabia, due to its inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters.

Despite seeing this sharp decline in box office revenue early on, Multiverse of Madness is still the eighth-most successful MCU film domestically, slightly besting Iron Man 3. A follow-up to Scott Derrickson's 2016 film Doctor Strange, Sam Raimi's sequel far surpassed its predecessor's domestic and worldwide sums of $232.6 million and $677.7 million, respectively. Derrickson was originally set to direct Multiverse of Madness, but departed from the position in early 2020 as a result of creative differences. Raimi was hired to step into Derrickson's place in the following months.

Starring Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead role as the Master of the Mystic Arts, Multiverse of Madness has found additional success on Disney+, setting a viewership record in its first week on the streaming service in June. With a reported production budget of approximately $200 million, netting a profit was no issue for Raimi's film.

In comparison to another 2022 MCU release, Multiverse of Madness has performed better than Thor: Love and Thunder. The Taika Waititi-directed film starring Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman was released in July, garnering a domestic total of $320 million to go with $706.5 million worldwide to date. The 68 percent drop for Love and Thunder in its second weekend is the largest drop for an MCU film at the domestic box office. Similarly to Multiverse of Madness, Love and Thunder was also not given a release in China and other territories that typically account for a sizable box office quantity.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is streaming on Disney+ and available for purchase on digital, Blu-ray, and 4k Ultra HD media.
