The Sixth Sense star Haley Joel Osment will play Victor Frankenstein in Wake the Dead, director Jay Russell’s adaptation of the horror comic by Steve Niles and Chee, Variety reports.
Published in 2004 by IDW, Wake the Dead is a modern take on Mary Shelley’s classic Frankenstein, centering on a college student named Victor (Osment) who attempts to reverse death. The movie lingered in development until January, when Guns ‘n’ Roses guitarist Slash announced Wake the Dead would be among the first projects from his new horror company Slasher Films.
Russell (Tuck Everlasting, The Water Horse) and James V. Hart (Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Tuck Everlasting) wrote the screenplay. Production is set to begin this fall.
Wake the Dead enters a development field crowded with Frankenstein movies, including Summit Entertainment’s This Dark Endeavor, Universal’s untitled project with Guillermo del Toro and Scott Stuber, Lakeshore Entertainment’s I, Frankenstein, and the recently announced Fox feature written by Max Landis.
The 23-year-old Osment, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in The Sixth Sense, has in recent years performed voice work on the Kingdom Hearts video-game series and the animated movies The Hunchback of Notre Dame II and The Jungle Book 2.
