WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for The Green Lantern, by Grant Morrison, Liam Sharp, Steve Oliff and Tom Orzechowski, on sale Feb. 12 from DC Comics.

At the end of Green Lantern: Blackstars, Hal Jordan that, rather than overwrite the main DC Universe, he'd used the Miracle Machine to overwrite the dead Earth-15 universe to give the titular authoritarians a place to rule. By doing this, Hal defeated the deadly Controller Mu and his Blackstars, trapping them in an alternate universe.

Hal is now back in the regular DC Universe, and he's being celebrated by his fellow Green Lanterns as a hero. The victory results in Hal being honored by the Guardians of the Universe. However, they're unsure of how to best reward the Green Lantern for his heroism, so they decide on an upgraded Power Battery.

First appearing alongside Hal in 1959's Showcase #22, the Power Battery is responsible for recharging the Green Lantern Corps' Power Rings, which are used to manifest their powers. Although the details of what this new battery can do aren't clear, Hal is told, "You may find some of its features interesting." This indicates there's something the new battery can do that the old one couldn't. The look of the battery is also different from the old design.

After receiving the new power battery, Hal and his fellow Green Lanterns say their oath, with the issue then picking up as the Guardians of the Universe depart for "the ultrawar," which is related to a "multi-crisis." It's not clear what they mean, but the Guardians do reveal Hal's actions during Blackstars have made the mythical Cosmic Grail real, which is part of the reason they're embarking on their quest.

Just what Hal's new Power Battery can do remains unclear, but it will likely help in dealing with the coming "multi-crisis" and the absence of the Guardians. Their decision to give Hal the new Power Battery seems linked to their choice to leave, so it's likely the two actions have something to do with one another, though just what that might be isn't clear at this time. However, Hal is already incredibly powerful, so it's likely whatever features this new Power Battery has are going to give him the edge in the fight ahead.

The Green Lantern #1 goes on sale Feb. 12 from DC Comics.
