Sid and Marty Krofft's classic character H.R. Pufnstuf will return to television on "Mutt & Stuff," Nick Jr.'s live-action series for preschoolers.

H.R. Pufnstuf, Cling and Clang, Freddy the Flute and the Rescue Racer will appear on the special "H.R. Pufnstuf Comes to Mutt & Stuff!,” which begins production this fall, with the premiere targeted for early 2016.

Produced by the Kroffts, "Mutt & Stuff" stars canine behavioral expert Cesar Millan and his 16-year-old son Calvin, and centers on teaching preschoolers about pet adoption, responsible pet care, identifying emotions and developing social skills.

Debuting in 1969, the offbeat "H.R. Pufnstuf" centered on a shipwrecked boy named Jimmy who, along with his talking flute Freddy, arrives on Living Island, where he's protected by its mayor, the helpful dragon H.R. Pufnstuf, from the wicked witch Witchiepoo.

“'H.R. Pufnstuf' was the first TV show my brother and I created, so it has always held a special place in our hearts,” Marty Krofft said in a statement. “Our fans constantly ask us to bring back Pufnstuf, and we feel the vibrant world of Mutt & Stuff is the perfect setting to revitalize these colorful characters and build excitement for new fans.”

The prolific producers went on to create such memorable, and quirky, series as "The Bugaloos," "Lidsville," "Sigmund and the Sea Monsters," "Land of the Lost" and "The Krofft Supershow" (featuring "Electra Woman and Dyna Girl").
