Warner Bros. is hammering out a deal with Guy Ritchie and his new producing partner Lionel Wigram to join The Man From U.N.C.L.E. following the departure last month of Steven Soderbergh, Deadline reports.

The planned adaptation of the popular 1960 spy-fi television had been tripped up by its search for a lead — George Clooney dropped out of the project in August — and rumored disagreements between Soderbergh and the studio over casting and the film’s $60 million budget.

Airing from 1964 to 1968 on NBC, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. followed the exploits of American spy Napoleon Solo and his Russian colleague Illya Kuryakin who as agents of U.N.C.L.E. ( United Network Command for Law and Enforcement) battled the menace known as T.H.R.U.S.H. The series was popular enough to spawn a spin-off series — the short-lived Girl From U.N.C.L.E., featuring the wonderfully named agent April Dancer — theatrical releases of extended television episodes, soundtrack albums, novels, magazines, comics, toys and a 1983 TV reunion.

The film would be the first project by the newly formed production company created by Ritchie and Wigram. Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows opens Dec. 16.
