Guy Pearce and Gary Oldman have signed on to director John Hillcoat’s Prohibition-era thriller The Wettest County in the World, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Mia Wasikowska and Jason Clarke also have been added to the adaptation of Matt Bondurant’s 2008 novel, joining Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy and Jessica Chastain.
Based on the true story of the author’s grandfather and two great-uncles, the movie follows the Bondurant Boys, a notorious gang of moonshiners who ran liquor through Franklin County, Virginia, during Prohibition and in the years after. Musician/author Nick Cave, who worked with Hillcoat on The Proposition, wrote the screenplay and is composing the music.
Pearce, who starred in The Proposition, will play a violent deputy while Oldman will portray a gangster who hires the Bondurants to deliver alcohol. Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland, The Kids Are All Right) will be LeBeouf’s love interest, a local Mennonite girl. Clarke (Chicago Code) is playing the brother to LaBeouf and Hardy.
Filming is set to begin on Feb. 28.
