After announcing he had completed the script, "Guardians of the Galaxy" director and screenwriter James Gunn confirmed that Star-Lord's father would appear in the sequel in response to a fan's question on Facebook.

On the same post in which he teased the "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" script, Gunn told a fan, "We will see Star-Lord's father in this movie." However, who that character is or how he ties into the franchise remains to be seen.

Another fan inquired about Gunn's decision to deviate from the comic book mythology; in the comics, Star-Lord's father is J'son, the ruler of Spartax, though Gunn has confirmed that Star-Lord's father will be a different character in the films. "Yeah, he's unappealing to me," Gunn explained. "First of all, his name is J'son."

Gunn has kept the identity of Star-Lord's father tightly under wraps, but "Guardians" star Chris Pratt counts himself as one of the lucky few in the know. "I know everything," Pratt teased in an earlier interview. "I will say that [Gunn's] pitch and his idea legitimately put tears in my eyes."
