The upcoming prequel series to Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury will be a separate anime series with its own story. According to Bandai Namco, the prequel series will also feature its own mobile suits. Although not many story details about The Witch From Mercury Prologue have been revealed yet, Bandai Namco did release the names of two of the new suits, which are Gundam Lfrith and Gundam Beguir-Beu.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The WItch From Mercury and The Witch From Mercury Prologue will be the first new Gundam television series in seven years, the last one being Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans (2015). They will also be the first mainline Gundam series to feature a female protagonist. Suletta Mercury, a girl described as having "a scarlet light burning in her pure heart" on the series' website, inhabits an era where corporations have taken their business ventures into space and established a huge economic system as a result. Suletta travels from her home planet Mercury to attend the Asticassia School of Technology. This school happens to be run by the Beneritt Group, which dominates the entire mobile suit industry.
