'Gundam' designer creates a car that actually changes shape

Famed for his work as a mecha designer for the Gundam franchise, Kunio Okawara isn't about to keep his creations confined to anime.

The 68-year-old artist has collaborated with EX・Machina Corporation to develop the Ex Machina, a two-seat electric concept car that  can actually change its shape. According to AmiAmi, the vehicle is envisioned as "a rideable smartphone or portable information terminal."

At a recent press conference at the Tokyo International Forum, Okawara said the Ex Machina “should be able to do what a full-sized automobile can’t." He added, "When they go to market, I’d like to add the Federation or Zeon logo.”

The hope is for the Ex Machina to be receive governmental approval and be available for sale within two years.

As Kotaku notes, Ex Machina's sci-fi influences have struck such a chord that there's even a crowdfunding campaign to develop an anime based on the car. Watch video of the vehicle in action below, courtesy of Nextwaves.
