Remember that whole plan announced in May to have Guillermo del Toro create a 3D stop-motion take on Pinocchio? Well, it isn't happening any time soon, if ever. The film is put on hold indefinitely, according to the story's writer Gris Grimly.

"Short to the point update on Pinocchio for those inquiring: It appears that this is not the right time for such a superior-adventurous flick," he tweeted.

According to Grimly, the main reason that Pinocchio isn't happening is because Frankenweenie was considered a box-office failure. It's not all bad news for him, though, because he says he's adapting Little Jordon Ray's Muddy Spud into a film.

Grimly has a special connection to Pinocchio, as the movie was based on his 2002 illustrated take on the Caro Collodi fairy tale. Del Toro developed the story for the big screen, and said he planned to have it take place in Italy between World War I and World War II. “It was when everyone was behaving like a puppet, except for puppets,” he said at the time.

Spinoff Online caught up with GDT in November while he was promoting Rise of the Guardians and he talked about the potential for Pinocchio to be made in 3D.

"I think Pinocchio could be beautiful in 3D," he said. "Because I think that, since they are stop-motion puppets, it creates a beautiful illusion — a sort of a glass box where you can see these creatures."
