Guillermo del Toro, Reel FX Bring Animated Day of the Dead to Life

The increasingly busy Guillermo del Toro is teaming with animation studio Reel FX to produce Day of the Dead, a CG-animated film directed by Emmy winner Jorge R. Gutierrez.

Written by Gutierrez (El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera) and Doug Langdale (El Tigre, Earthworm Jim), the film is described as an action-packed Romeo and Juliet-style love story set against the backdrop of the Mexican Day of the Dead. It's set for release in fall 2014.

"I have admired Jorge’s work for a long time. He has a unique aesthetic and sense of humor," del Toro said in a statement. Day of the Dead offers a perfect opportunity for his sensibilities to shine. This is a colorful, vibrant, vital fable that utilizes the animation medium in an incredible way. The object of the tale is not only to talk about life but to dazzle us – jolt us- into living to the fullest.”

Reel FX is working on Beasts of Burden, a CG-animated adaptation of the award-winning Dark Horse comic series by Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson.
