Created by Emi Nagashima (better known as AMY), Gudetama is owned by Sanrio, the company behind Hello Kitty. A depressed, yellow egg yolk, Gudetama often laments the difficulties of life. The then-26-year-old Nagashima created the character in 2013 as part of a food-based competition Sanrio held among its employees. A Gudetama animated series premiered in 2014 as part of the Japanese television show Asa Chan!. The series had aired approximately 1000 one-minute episodes as of 2017.

Over the years, there have been countless pieces of Gudetama merchandise like pencils, suitcases and a mobile game, not to mention Gudetama-themed clothing lines, restaurants, a cosmetic line, an EVA Air plane and a Seibu Railway train. The character of Gudetama has even expanded to the world of comic books. In 2019, Sanrio teamed with Oni Press for a series of graphic novels starring the lazy egg, starting with Gudetama: Love for the Lazy by Wook-Jin Clark, which was published in early 2020.
