Yondu Udonta was the leader of a group of Ravagers and Peter Quill's adoptive father in Guardians Of The Galaxy. When Peter was just a child, Yondu decided to take him in and train him to be a Ravager as well. Since Yondu was sold to the Kree as a slave by his own parents as a child, he had a hard time showing much affection.

This led to Yondu being an awkward parent at best when Peter was growing up, and many of his actions were perceived as heartless. He had times in which he wasn't a great parent, but Yondu proved that he wasn't so bad after all, especially compared to someone like Ego.

10 Bad: He Gave Peter Tough Ravager Training

Peter was just a child when he lost his mother, but Yondu not only took him away from Earth but he also quickly put him through training that he never asked for. According to Peter, Yondu would often beat him up in order to teach him how to fight, and also taught him how to be a talented thief. It's hardly an honest job, and for a child that was not only emotionally traumatized but also light years away from the life and people that he knew, he was in no way ready to start such intense training.

9 Great: He Didn't Take Peter To Ego

When he was a younger man, Yondu was paid handsomely to deliver Ego's children to him. Eventually, he found out that Ego killed every child that was delivered, and Yondu couldn't take Peter to his father with a clear conscience, instead deciding that Peter was much safer with him. He was correct, as Ego was never able to find Peter until he caught wind of the fact that Peter was able to hold an infinity stone in his hand without dying.

8 Bad: He Lied About His Reason For Adopting Peter

When Peter asked time and time again why Yondu stole him from his home on Earth, Yondu would tell him that it was because he was skinny and good for thieving. It's hardly an endearing line, since it implies that that's all Peter is worth to him. Yondu didn't seem to consider the possibility that Peter would happen to come across Ego and listen to his lies, but if Yondu had been honest, many of the bad things that happened in the second movie might have been avoided entirely.

7 Great: He Never Planned To Hand Peter Over To Ayesha

Furious that the Guardians disrespected the Sovereign by stealing their batteries, Ayesha decides to hire Yondu's group of ravagers to capture them for her. Despite a large amount of reward money for their capture, Yondu states that he would take Rocket's offer of the batteries instead, which were worth a fourth of the reward money. This infuriates his crew, and he is willing to fight the members who would betray him for the sake of protecting Peter.

6 Bad: He Threatened To Eat Peter

There are a countless number of dad jokes, but Yondu's longest-running joke absolutely terrified Peter as a child. It wasn't until Peter was an adult that he realized that Yondu never really had plans to eat him. Even then, he told Peter that his crew had all wanted to eat him and that he should be grateful that they never did.

However, Peter makes an excellent point that not eating someone isn't really something to brag about.

5 Great: He Crashed A Ship Into Ego

Injured and furious Ego

After Ego reveals that he is the reason why Peter's mother died, Peter starts to attack him. Angered by this, Ego tries to use Peter as a battery before he gets hit by a ship. Although not thrilled by the number of light speed jumps that Rocket made them take, Yondu was willing to go down to the planet to save Peter from Ego. He even knew that Ego was a planet beforehand, which was a fact that even made Rocket hesitate for a second.

4 Bad: Ravagers Reflect Their Leader

Yondu getting rid of the traitor ravagers

The Ravagers aboard Yondu's ship reflected the kind of person he used to be: tough, greedy, and merciless. Since he didn't really show much emotion towards Peter thanks to what he went through as a child raised by the Kree, the crew members didn't seem to respect Peter at all. They also didn't seem to have a sort of moral code since Yondu had broken the Ravager code ages ago. This meant they were fine with him accepting money from Ego, and some even questioned why Peter was exempt.

3 Great: He Knew Peter Would Come Back

Despite the fact that Peter left the Ravagers, Yondu said that he believed Peter would return someday. Knowing of Peter's love for music, he had purchased a Zune, which had hundreds of songs on it.

This is a stark contrast to Ego, who mercilessly smashed his previous music player and casually quoted songs to manipulate his son. Yondu knew of Peter's appreciation for music and got him a really thoughtful gift.

2 Bad: He Claimed He Would Kill Peter

Yondu in his ship

In the first movie, Yondu stated that because Peter betrayed them and ran off with the orb, he would capture and kill Peter himself. He even went so far as to put a bounty on Peter's head. After capturing Peter, he beats him up for a bit and even puts his arrow to Peter's neck before they strike a deal. After making the deal, Yondu warns Peter that if he betrays him again, he would kill him and the rest of the Guardians as well.

1 Great: He Saved Peter's Life

Yondu holds Peter's face as he dies in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2.

While the rest of the Guardians evacuated the planet as the bomb went off, Yondu stayed behind to save Peter, stating that he wanted to do something good for once. Taking the flight suit and the spacesuit from Rocket, Yondu uses the flight suit to take Peter into space and put the spacesuit on Peter, knowing that Peter was mortal again now that Ego was dead. In his last moments, he tells Peter that he was lucky to be his father and apologized for all the mistakes he ever made.
