Karen Gillan has offered a glimpse of what's in store for her blue-skinned cyborg character, Nebula, in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The former assassin and adopted daughter of Thanos made an appearance on Gillan's Instagram story. The post showed half of Gillan's face in Nebula makeup from the neck up with her mouth covered by her hand. There are what look to be several abrasions visible in multiple spots, from her forehead down to the side of her neck. Gillan also captioned the post with, "I'm on around makeup 170th application, but I appreciate the cake anyway."

While plot details are still hard to come by for the third and final Guardians of the Galaxy film, the image of a battle-worn Nebula does seem to fit with the darker tone that writer/director James Gunn has previously promised. "It's big," he said in January. "It's so, so big and dark and different from what people might be expecting it to be...I just want to be true to the characters, the story and give people the wrap-up that they deserve for the story."

Co-star Zoe Saldana, who plays Nebula's adoptive sister, Gamora, has recently set a high bar for the threequel. "I think it's going to be the best one yet," she said in an interview. She also called the shoot, "a bittersweet moment because it is our understanding that this will be the last Guardians of the Galaxy. So it's bitter in that sense, but it's sweet because we are all very grateful to have lived this journey together and James Gunn really is giving us a beautiful ending, and this story is really compelling."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is still over a year away from its release date, but audiences won't have to wait that long to see the team in action. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is in the works and expected to arrive later this year, with Gunn teasing at a script he's rather fond of. "I'm almost jealous of it," the director said, "even though I wrote it because people freak out so much on how much they love the script for the holiday special that I'm almost like, 'Well, wait. I've got this movie here I've been working on for two years. You love the holiday special that I literally wrote in a very short amount of time.'"

There is also the animated series I Am Groot coming to Disney+ at some point this year. During a highlight reel played at the Disney Meeting of Shareholders 2022 earlier in March a glimpse of Baby Groot was featured. Last seen in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Baby Groot will take center stage in a series of animated shorts directed by Kirsten Lepore. Vin Diesel, who has voiced all MCU iterations of Groot, will again be on hand for the series.

While those two projects still don't have concrete release dates, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to hit theaters May 23, 2023.
