Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is a lot closer than you might think. On FacebookGuardians writer-director James Gunn revealed that the upcoming sequel will hit theaters "in a little under 3 years."

Gunn revealed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's timeframe on one of his Facebook posts, in which he thanked fans for pushing Vol. 2 to the top of the charts for home release in the UK. When a fan asked about Vol. 3's release date in the comments, Gunn responded with, "In a little under 3 years." Though he didn't give an exact date, the timeframe suggests the movie will arrive in theaters sometime in 2020 or 2021.

At the time of writing, Marvel Studios has already staked out three dates for untitled projects in 2020 -- May 1, August 7 and November 6 -- and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could easily nab one of those spots. However, since these dates were on the Marvel schedule before Vol. 3 was announced, the Guardians followup could very well get a new date. What's more, Marvel's schedule has fluctuated dramatically since it was unveiled in October 2014, with Black Panther and Captain Marvel shifting dates to make room for films like Ant-Man and the Wasp and Spider-Man: Homecoming, so no date should be considered set in stone until it gets closer to completion.

Additionally, Gunn confirmed that the third installment of the Guardians franchise will be titled Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, "unless something changes."

Gunn also put the kibosh on the idea he could helm Disney's Star Wars: Episode IX, which just lost its director this week. "I would not and could not. Right now I'm doing Guardians 3, producing a new film with David Yarovesky, and developing Starchy & Hutch for Amazon.com," he explained. "My plate is full for three years."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stars Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Vin Diesel as Baby Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon, Michael Rooker as Yondu Udonta, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, Chris Sullivan as Taserface, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Glenn Close as Irani Rael and Kurt Russell as Ego. The movie is now available on digital download, DVD and Blu-Ray.

At the time of writing, no official release date has been set for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
