Marvel Studios unveiled the first official teaser for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The first trailer of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 provides fans with the first full look at the upcoming third installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise. The footage showed Will Poulter's Adam Warlock, Rocket Raccoon's origin story -- including his girlfriend, Lylla, Zoe Saldana's Gamora and more. Much of the trailer teases an incredibly emotional story, with multiple clips of members of the Guardians in tears, injured or grim-faced.

Gunn, who has helmed all three Guardians films for the MCU, has previously stated more than once that Guardians 3 will be the final film in this particular series. In January, the writer/director stated that film would be "the end for us, the last time people will see this team of Guardians." While he has not provided any details, Gunn has also promised that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will not only subvert audience expectations but will strike a darker tone than the films before it.

However, the Guardians will appear once more in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which is planned to air on Disney+ in December. While exact plot details remain unknown, Gunn has teased that the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will introduce "more than one" character to the MCU. He has also described the Holiday Special as "the greatest thing [he's] ever done."

Written and directed by Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 officially wrapped filming in May 2022. While exact plot details remain unknown, franchise star Chris Pratt, who has starred as Peter Quill/Star-Lord in all three Guardians films, described the third volume as a "masterpiece" in a recent interview. "[Director] James Gunn just watched a rough assembly the other day. I called him yesterday. We Facetimed, and he's very, very proud of the work that everyone's done," Pratt said. "He said it's the best work all of us have ever done. He feels very, very confident. The script was amazing."

Pratt continued, saying, "I can say with utter confidence that [Gunn has] made a true masterpiece, and I just cannot wait for people to see it. It's James Gunn. He did all three movies, which is really rare and really special in the world of big box-office trilogies." Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will see the return of Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Zoe Saldaña as Gamora, Bradley Cooper as Rocket and Vin Diesel as Groot.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 releases in theaters on May 5, 2023.
