On its release in August 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.1 introduced the hot-headed, half-human, half-celestial "criminal," Peter Quill. Known as Star-Lord among his peers, he is in constant search of opportunities that yield the biggest scores. Widely recognized for not following orders, Quill's recalcitrant nature rivals even that of Tony Stark. Kevin Feige, producer of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogies, found the perfect match for the charming character of Peter Quill in Chris Pratt.

Early on in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.1, viewers can witness Star-Lord's expert combat abilities while fighting off Korath the Pursuer on Morag. His unique fighting style, paired with his quick thinking and expertise in dual-wielding Kree submachine guns, allow for entertaining combat scenes. However, Star-Lord's true powers reside inside of him and make their presence only fully known throughout the following Guardians of the Galaxy movies. From regeneration to immortality, Star-Lord's powers manifest themselves in precarious situations, saving him and his friends on numerous occasions.

Star-Lord Shared Ego's Connection to the Light

After being abducted by Yondu Udonta at the age of eight, Quill was quickly taught the Ravager ways so that he could be of use for their thievish plans. Apart from learning to steal and attaining excellent marksmanship, Quill learned to be an extraordinary pilot and came to be known as Star-Lord. At this point, Quill didn't know about his connection to the light and his relation to a Celestial. His ambitions grew exponentially, though, and quickly amounted to him forging his own path and betraying the Ravagers.

After being joined by Drax, Rocket, Groot and finally Gamora, the Guardians of the Galaxy fought against Ronan the Destroyer as part of the last battle scene in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.1. During this battle, Star-Lord displayed his Celestial powers by withstanding the destructive energy of the Power Stone. Although being slowly ripped apart upon touching the stone, Quill was the only one who could withstand the stone's enormous power for an extended period of time.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 picks up after its predecessor and surrounds Ego's deceitful efforts to convince Quill in joining his fathers plan of growing his power in the universe. After being incapacitated by Ego, who wanted to harness his powers, Quill was freed by Rocket, and the resulting battle between Star-Lord and Ego demonstrated Star-Lord's true powers. While Ego's essence was alive, Quill was practically immortal, which ultimately helped him in destroying his Celestial father. Quill also learned how to manipulate cosmic energy from Ego, using it against him during the fight in the form of superhuman physical strikes. Most notably, Quill mastered molecular manipulation, demonstrated by surrounding himself with rocks to defend against Ego. Forming a giant Pac-Man as a body not only added to the comedic value of the movie but also showcased Star-Lord's enormous potential.

Peter Quill's Powers Died With Ego

As a consequence of Ego's destruction, Peter Quill lost the source of his powers and reverted back to his human self. Fans speculated the possibility of Quill learning how to channel his inner powers. However, James Gunn, the director of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, promptly responded by denying these claims. Peter Quill will now most likely have to rely on his human capabilities to save the universe from evil forces.

With the loss of his powers, Star-Lord definitely lost his rank among the strongest Marvel heroes. Nonetheless, his likable character and astuteness resulted in him being a well-received MCU character. With the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, Kevin Feige sets out to conclude the Guardians' history in the MCU and will hopefully address some questions fans are eagerly waiting to have answers to.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits screens on May 5.
