Guardians of the Galaxy #13 will see a massively expanded roster for Marvel's cosmic heroes, as part of the "New Age of Space." One of these heroes is Peter Quill/Star-Lord, who received a major power boost after a near-death experience with the Olympian gods.
Speaking to CBR, writer Al Ewing discussed Quill's new role as Master of the Sun and how it tied into co-creator Steve Englehart's original plans for the character. "My intention with that story was to bring Peter back a little to his '70s roots and try and introduce a little of that DNA back into his make-up; he's a character who's had multiple origins, but that very first one is full of little touches of magic, even more so because it's no longer something that 'happened.'" Ewing said.
He continued, "So the idea was to give Peter a push to a new phase of his life by sending him on an astrological quest, similar to the one Steve Englehart apparently had planned for him early on, but to do it all in one issue - 12 astrological houses in 12 pages - and Juann Cabal, being the master artist that he is, absolutely nailed it."
Ewing also said that Quill's new power set has transformed him into a very versatile character. "In terms of the future of the character, making him the Master of the Sun opens a few interesting doors for him; he could be anything from his old self with some new tricks to a full-on Doctor Strange of Space, and it'll be fun seeing where he naturally comes to rest," he explained.
In Guardians of the Galaxy #10, Quill made his return to the mainstream Marvel Universe while the other Guardians were battling one of Knull's symbiote dragons. Quill then utilized his new powers to destroy the dragon and reunited with his friends.
