“Guardians of the Galaxy” Soars on Friday as Weekend Projections Rise

The sky’s the limit for James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which brought in an estimated $37.8 million in North America Friday.

Variety reports the latest Marvel Studios film is now looking at a “$92 million-plus” opening weekend, up from the $65 million to $70 million the film was expected to make earlier this week. That would blow away the previous record-holder for the top August domestic opener of all time — 2007’s “The Bourne Ultimatum,” which opened to $69.3 million. “Guardians” has already claimed the biggest Thursday night opening numbers of the year.

In addition to its boffo box office, the film is also doing well with critics. It’s currently tracking in the green on Metacritic, where it ranks at 76 — “generally favorable reviews.” In his review of the film, Comic Book Resources’ Albert Ching said, “In a movie where many things could have gone very wrong, Gunn and company absolutely nail it. ‘Guardians’ is brisk, endearing and comedic in a way that goes beyond the standard witty banter and one-liners, transporting the film into ‘genuinely funny’ territory.”

“Guardians of the Galaxy” stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou , John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin. The sequel will arrive July 28, 2017.
