WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy#11 by Donny Cates, Cory Smith, Victor Olazaba, David Curiel and VC's Cory Petit, on sale now.

At the start of Donny Cates and Geoff Shaw's new Guardians of the Galaxy series, Star-Lord and Groot were the only two members of the cosmic team left. With Drax dead, Gamora on the run and Rocket Raccoon missing, Peter Quill took it upon himself to form a new version of the team to prevent the Black Order from bringing back their master, Thanos. However, almost as soon as this crisis was dealt with, another, even bigger threat arrived in the cosmos: the Universal Church of Truth.

However, this version of the Church is bigger, badder and infinitely more dangerous than the one that's menaced the Marvel Universe before. This time-traveling Universal Church of Truth has massive temple ship with a secret weapon powered by the life force of their prisoners. In Guardians of the Galaxy #10, with most of Star-Lord's new team defeated by the Church, it was up to Moondragon, Groot, Rocket and Kid Magus to save everyone.

Unfortunately, the situation has only gotten worse. In Guardians of the Galaxy #11, the rest of the Guardians fall, and the Church sets its sights on planet Earth. There is only one Guardian left (barely) standing: Rocket Raccoon.

Guardians of the Galaxy 7 Rocket Raccoon return 1093

At the start of this new Guardians of the Galaxy volume, there was a real mystery surrounding Rocket Raccoon. While he wasn't with the team any longer, we had no idea where he had gone. All we really had to go on were vague bits and pieces of information about how people were angry with him. However, we eventually found ut that Rocket chose to abandon his makeshift family when he discovered the experiments and enhancements that made him the walking, talking, sentient raccoon that we know him to be were slowly coming undone. With his systems failing, Rocket is growing weaker and weaker, and his days appear to be numbered.

While he's no longer the fighter he once was, he still decided to join Moondragon and Groot in the fight against the Universal Church of Truth. To head into battle, Rocket armed himself with his biggest invention yet: a giant mech suit that's packed with heavy artillery and also helps him stay alive longer.

In Guardians of the Galaxy #11, the cavalry arrives when Moondragon, Kid Magus, Groot and Rocket blast their way onto the Universal Church of Truth's temple ship. Unfortunately, the villainous organization is simply too powerful. Over the past few months, it has collected the cosmos' greatest warriors and superheroes to build its mind-controlled army. Now, the Church unleashes the full might of its troops on the remaining Guardians, and they simply prove to be too much to stop.

Guardians of the Galaxy Rocket last hope

Before long, Rocket's mech suit is torn down, Moondragon, Groot, Magus and Star-Lord are knocked unconscious, and the Patriarch is getting ready to assimilate them to the Church. Now, with no more opponents to stand in its way, the Church finally turns its attention to Earth. But there is still one hope left. Although Groot may be down, his little drones are still awake, and they are able to pry Rocket of the wreckage of his armor.

With no more suit to keep him alive, Rocket is seemingly on death's door. However, he doesn't let that stop him. Dragging one of his signature rifles behind him, Rocket heads off into battle for his family one last time.
