Karen Gillan admitted that she'd love to continue portraying Nebula beyond Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

"I love my character so much. I'm sort of obsessed with her," Gillan said to The Hollywood Reporter during an interview about her latest film, Gunpowder Milkshake. "I just get such a kick out of playing a character that's really removed from myself."

The actor added that she's become "emotionally invested" in Nebula, especially following the character's story with Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. "So I would love to continue the journey of the character," Gillan said. "I don't know what that would really look like without [director] James [Gunn] or [Drax actor] Dave [Bautista], but I really like playing her, so I'm not eager to finish."

Gillan's comments came a couple of weeks after the actor revealed the process of transforming into Nebula. "So this is what happens when you need to wear prosthetics in a film," Gillan said in a video posted on her Instagram story, which showed her covered from her head to her shoulders in the blue Nebula mold. "Normally they would do the whole face too, but my claustrophobia was so bad they kindly left my face and they're gonna do it separately."

Gillan made her debut as Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero film Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014. She reprised the role in 2017's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, 2018's Avengers: Infinity War and 2019's Avengers: Endgame. She will also return as the character in the upcoming films Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023).

In other Guardians-related news, Gillan's co-star Bautista elaborated on his decision to exit the franchise during a recent appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show. "I said it recently because I've been doing interviews and talking a lot about Guardians and I didn't think it was going to be news because I figured everybody assumed that this is how this works," he said at the time. "We work in trilogies, and James Gunn has already announced that it's his last film, and when James is done, I'm done."

Bautista said that he's ready to retire the role because he's getting older, explaining, "I'm also going to be 54 years old by the time Guardians 3 comes out, and just like, the shirtless thing is getting harder and harder for me...the journey has come full circle and I'm just ready to kind of step aside and wrap it up."

Gillan is currently starring in the new Netflix movie, Gunpowder Milkshake, directed and co-written by Navot Papushado, which is set to premiere in theaters internationally later this summer. As for the MCU, she will appear as Nebula once again in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, expected to arrive in theaters May 5, 2023.
