Director James Gunn recently teased that Nebula and Mantis will play a big role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after Karen Gillan confessed she and Pom Klementieff cried while reading the film's script."I hope it's not because they thought they had too few lines because honestly their roles are both pretty huge and it seems greedy," Gunn joked on Twitter after Gillan's comments went viral.RELATED: Guardians of the Galaxy 3's Script Hasn't Changed Due to Marvel's Release Schedule

Gunn's tweet was in direct response to Gillan revealing that the script is "so emotional," noting, "We read it in the same room together, and then looked at each other and we were in floods of tears." He continued, "You're learning more about existing characters and on a deeper level. I'm really excited at exploring Nebula, post-Thanos."

While Gunn previously confirmed that he will be done with the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise after the third film, Gillan has said that she'd love to continue playing Nebula. "I would love to continue the journey of the character," the actor said at the time. "I don't know what that would really look like without James [Gunn] or Dave [Bautista], but I really like playing her, so I'm not eager to finish."

While Gillan didn't elaborate on what made her cry, Gunn previously hinted that the third Guardians film will include some major deaths, saying at the time, "...In Guardians, yes, obviously I killed Yondu, I killed the big original Groot, but it isn't the same thing. We know most of them are going to make it out alive. At least for two movies."

In related news, Gunn also recently revealed that, while his version of The Suicide Squad was rated R, he has no interest in making an R-rated Guardians of the Galaxy film. "No, I totally think I could do whatever I think the story requires," Gunn said at the time. "I would never do an R-rated Guardians of the Galaxy. It just wouldn't be what that show is. It's for families, and old people love it. It's more like a fairy tale. And I think it is completely, that is what it is. Suicide Squad is something very different than that, and the stakes are different. All of that is different."

Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn and Elizabeth Debicki. The film arrives in theaters May 5, 2023.
