Writer and director James Gunn offered a filming update on The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special while also teasing that the script is so beloved that he got jealous.

"It's still upcoming in the shoot," Gunn told Collider when asked for an update on the special's production. "We were supposed to shoot one day in LA, and there's too much Omicron around, so we couldn't do it. We're going to have to fit it in. I haven't started yet. I'm excited to. It's fun."

While the Omicron surge has put a halt to many activities in Los Angeles, it seems as if fitting in a time to shoot won't take long once things are safe. And as Gunn said, he's eager to begin work, though he did have an interesting reaction to the praise he received for the special's script.

"The holiday special is... I'm almost jealous of it, even though I wrote it because people freak out so much on how much they love the script for the holiday special that I'm almost like, 'Well, wait. I've got this movie here I've been working on for two years. You love the holiday special that I literally wrote in a very short amount of time,'" Gunn admitted. "But, it is really funny and really good."

The other movie, of course, is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which will be Gunn's last time working with the characters. The film will arrive after the holiday special, which the director said is required viewing for Guardians 3. The movie is currently shooting, and Gunn spoke a bit about the process and how much he's loved working with Peacemaker star Chukwudi Iwuji.

"It's going great. Chukwudi, who plays Murn in Peacemaker, is one of the main characters in the movie and people are freaking out over how good this guy is," Gunn said. "Literally freaking out. I think that I'm really happy. I gave a bunch of scenes to Marvel right before Christmas break. Kevin [Feige] went... They were all really, really, really stoked. But also, it's not going to be the movie people... It's different than what people are going to expect. It's a hard road, but I'm really happy with it so far."

So far, Iwuji's role has been kept under wraps, but rumors continue to swirl claiming he'll be playing the High Evolutionary for his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special arrives this holiday season on Disney+. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives May 23, 2023, in theaters.
