Director James Gunn claimed in November that there's one final Easter egg in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy that no one had spotted. When one fan voiced his skepticism, the filmmaker backed up his claim with the promise of cold hard cash, pledging, "If there is no Easter egg, I will give you a hundred thousand dollars."RELATED: "GotG"-Style Cassette Player Prices Skyrocketing on eBayThat set fandom sleuthing in earnest, with Screen Rant proposing on Monday that it may have found Guardians of the Galaxy's holy grail. The theory goes something like this: If you take the coordinates/time for three key locations in the 2014 Marvel Studios film -- namely Earth, The Dark Aster and Knowhere -- and convert them into letters of the alphabet so that 1=A 2=B, etc., with a few notable exceptions, it reveals the legend, "SHH, THIS IS MOMS CANCER… MEREDITH QUILL X"As that website notes, that would be a reference to the plot point in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 that Ego caused the cancer that killed Star-Lord's mother Meredith.RELATED: Marvel’s "Guardians of the Galaxy:" Get To Know the Original Cosmic TeamIt's an interesting theory, to be certain, but one promptly shot down by Gunn himself. When asked on Twitter to confirm or deny whether that was indeed the final Easter egg, the filmmaker replied, "I can deny (sorry)"

It seems the quest for Guardians of the Galaxy's lost Easter egg will continue for a while yet.

In theaters now, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stars Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Vin Diesel as Baby Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon, Michael Rooker as Yondu Udonta, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, Chris Sullivan as Taserface, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Glenn Close as Irani Rael and Kurt Russell as Ego.
