With more than 40 outfits to unlock in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, developer Eidos-Montreal recently provided fans a detailed look at what went into creating some of the most iconic designs.

In a PlayStation Blog post, Eidos-Montreal delved into the design process for both the new Golden Guardians outfits and classic, comic-inspired threads as well. Concept art for the Golden Guardians outfits was shared, showing off alternate color schemes in addition to various armor and weapon designs. Marvel comic book artist RB Silva, who the developer collaborated with on Golden Guardian outfits, discussed how he came up with the concept of his design. Silva said his design began with the idea of unifying a team through armor, which then evolved into tailoring outfits for the unique shapes of each individual Guardian.

Inspired by military outfits, Silva noted that when it came to the Golden Guardians he had to come up with "something very resistant, fit for very extreme, aggressive conditions, so a costume sewed by a teenager in his bedroom to fight crime might not work very well here." The design process was not without its challenges, however, as Silva discussed the difficulty of not only finding a way to represent each character's unique personality but to do so using a limited range of shapes.

Eidos-Montreal explained that Star-Lord's Team-Lord outfit was directly inspired by the Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning Guardians of the Galaxy comic book run from 2008, while Gamora's Black Vortex outfit was pulled straight out of the 2015 comic Guardians of the Galaxy & X-Men: Black Vortex Alpha #1. Meanwhile, Drax's Katathian Monk outfit came from the 2017 comic All-New Guardians of the Galaxy, a design which the developer noted perfectly represents Drax's duality of seriousness and humor. Rocket's Hero of Halfworld outfit was inspired by the 1985 comic written by Rocket Raccoon co-creator Bill Mantlo, while Groot's monstrous Five Horsemen of the Apocalypse outfit originated in a variant cover for 2016's Age of Apocalypse #8.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is an action-adventure game that lets players step into the jet boots of Star-Lord, the leader of a ragtag team of heroes-for-hire who become the galaxy's last line of defense against the Universal Church of Truth. Though Star-Lord is the only playable character, the other Guardians can be commanded during combat or interacted with outside of it. The game is also packed with Easter eggs for longtime fans, while players unfamiliar with the franchise may still enjoy its detailed, interactive narrative style.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is currently available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
