James Gunn is back for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, a film that seems as though it will be majorly different to its predecessors, what with their Gamora dead and a rogue one on the run along with a power-struggle between Star-Lord and their new companion, Thor.

There's plenty of villainous foes for the team to face on their adventures across space and the comics provide a wealth of material for the talent at Marvel Studios to draw from. In that regard, here are five that we want to see and five that we don't.

10 Want: Adam Warlock

Warlock was teased at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and ever since his reveal, fans have wondered as to who would bring the infamous golden space hero to life. He's not entirely villainous, helping the Avengers with their little Thanos problem way back when, but he appears to be in the hands of some vindictive enemies that the Guardians have made.

As such, he could quite easily undergo a captivating redemption arc that leaves him as a recurring hero, rather than a Loki-type villain that constantly pops back up to play-fight with the Avengers.

9 Don't Want: Annihilus

Annihilus is a stellar villain who hails from the Negative Zone and his rivalry with various of the heroes in the Marvel universe is both captivating and entertaining. His design is bug-like and horrifying and his presence has risen from campy to often haunting.

However, as good as a villain as he may be, Annihilus is better suited as a Fantastic Four foe, rather than a villain for the Guardians, despite having duked it out with them in the comics before. The Fantastic Four films could quite easily delve into the Negative Zone whilst Guardians is already juggling a Warlock teaser, Thor and a time-traveling Gamora, so throwing in another dimension might be a bit much.

8 Want: Brother Royal

Brother Royal's most iconic clash in the comics was with the heroic but villainous naked silver guy who surfs through space along with his best bud, Galactus the hungry caterpillar. Brother Royal attempted to take over the planet as he led the Brotherhood of Badoon into battle.

His clash with the Guardians came after he amassed a series of concentration camps. The heroic team of space heroes began to free prisoners but, in the process, Star Lord was captured. A similar story could allow for something a little less end-of-the-universe after two movies with Thanos. On top of that, down to Earth stories, or down-to-Ego, seems to be the Guardian's thing after the second film.

7 Don't Want: Dormammu

Dormammu debuted in Doctor Strange as a gigantic body in his own dimension. He wasn't exactly fond of the Harry-Potter-wannabe who had a thing for bargaining. With him being a pivotal villain for the master of the mystic arts, pulling him away for the Guardians would not only be a little jarring but somewhat out of their depth.

However, it could be a way to have Doctor Strange appear in a Guardians film but we've already got Thor on the team so another one of the Avengers might overstuff the more close-knit narrative that the films have embraced thus far.

6 Want: Cardinal Raker

There's a sort of Paladin-based Crusade-like faction in the Marvel galaxy with the Universal Church of Truth and the Cardinals act as a 'skilled strike force' for this organization. In the comics, the Guardians of the Galaxy were decreed to be blasphemers and, as such, enemies to the church.

This faction may be somewhat similar to the Sovereign and so perhaps merging the two could be a way forward, as they did make Ego the Living Planet Star Lord's father. Nonetheless, seeing this valiant knight of the order hunting down the Guardians alongside Adam Warlock could make for a thrilling film.

5 Don't Want: J'son of Spartax

J'son of Spartax and Ego

For context, J'Son is Star Lord's father in the comics, but this was changed for the films as Kurt Russel's Ego was revealed to be his dad. As such, Star Lord has a father and a foster father, so there's no need to throw another spanner in the mix.

They could make J'Son an uncle or something similar but too much family drama would make the series far too reminiscent of Star Wars - it's an entire galaxy, not everyone has to be related. He's a fairly interesting persona but there's plenty of others that James Gunn could draw from. Perhaps an easter egg would be a good alternative.

4 Want: Thane

So whilst the Guardians should move away from universal threats like Thanos, perhaps his brat of a son would be a worthy inclusion. He's a manipulator and only holds a slight flicker of a flame to his father's raging volcano of destructive power and so he's not quite the same threat.

Perhaps the MCU's Thane could be motivated by the death of the man that raised him who seemed to be an all-powerful and all-mighty being. Whether or not he remains an Inhuman would be up to Marvel Studios, but with the film never happening and the show seemingly out of canon, that might be difficult to explain to general audiences.

3 Don't Want: Mephisto

Mephisto is a fantastic villain and has various stellar arcs in the comics, albeit he is part of a major stain in Spider-Man's run but we don't talk about that. He was a major part of Infinity Gaunlet and has ties with Ghost Rider and he has faced the Guardians of the Galaxy in the comics before.

Nonetheless, he is a very mystical being and has a much more supernatural presence that would be better suited to either a Ghost Rider film or something related to Doctor Strange. As such, the Guardians are probably best delving into more of the cosmic source material rather than looking deep down in the pits of the underworld for foes to face.

2 Want: High Evolutionary

Herbert Wyndham, otherwise known as the High Evolutionary, was actually born on Earth. He was given secrets that paved the way for him to completely alter his own genes which unfortunately resulted in him being kicked out from the prestigious school of Oxford. What's interesting about this character is that he is the father of Jessica Drew, Spider-Woman.

By introducing the High Evolutionary, even in simply mentioning his name, having him make a cameo or throwing him in a post-credit scene, James Gunn could set up a potential debut for Spider-Woman in the MCU.

1 Don't Want: Galactus

Much like with a lot of the other villains on this list that have faced the Guardians, Galactus would be better suited to another team. Specifically, he's more cut out for the Fantastic Four. Sure, like with the High Evolutionary, he could have a tiny role or simply be mentioned as to set him up for the future, but it would be somewhat of a repeat of Thanos.

Galactus is something they should save for a future day as the current MCU needs to focus less on a repeat of the Infinity Saga and more on individual narratives. As such, Doctor Doom may be the right path forward for the Fantastic Four and the MCU at large.
