Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 writer/director James Gunn warned fans to look out for spoilers but noted that they wouldn't necessarily ruin the movie-watching experience.

"It might be wise to be careful what you’re reading on social networking sites starting at the end of April if you want to avoid spoilers for [Vol. 3]," he said on Twitter in response to a fan. "That said, I don’t think your enjoyment of the film will be diminished much by knowing them."

Gunn, who has helmed all three Guardians films for the MCU, has previously stated more than once that Vol. 3 will be the final film in this series. In January 2022, the writer/director stated that the film would be "the end for us, the last time people will see this team of Guardians." Gunn has also promised that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will not only subvert audience expectations but will strike a darker tone than the films before it.

Vol. 3 Will Conclude Rocket Raccoon's Story

Released by Marvel Studios, a new synopsis for Vol. 3 teased a life-or-death scenario for Rocket Racoon, voiced by Bradley Cooper. Per the synopsis, Chris Pratt's Peter Quill/Star-Lord "must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life." Failure to succeed could see the "end of the Guardians as we know them."

Gunn has previously revealed that he considers Rocket to be the "secret protagonist of the Guardians movies," and that Vol. 3 is largely a vehicle to properly wrap up the character's story arc. "I think he exemplifies a lot of the traits of all the Guardians. They've had all these traumas, and it brings them together. I just think that his [trauma] is more extreme than others."

Vol. 3 officially wrapped filming in May 2022. Chris Pratt, who has starred as Peter Quill/Star-Lord in all three Guardians films, described the third volume as a "masterpiece" in previous interviews. "He said it's the best work all of us have ever done. He feels very, very confident. The script was amazing," Pratt said. "I can say with utter confidence that [Gunn has] made a true masterpiece, and I just cannot wait for people to see it. It's James Gunn. He did all three movies, which is really rare and really special in the world of big box-office trilogies."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will also see the return of Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Karen Gillan as Nebula and Vin Diesel as Groot. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 releases in theaters on May 5, 2023.
