Guardians of the Galaxy star Karen Gillan has weighed in on James Gunn's return to the director's chair for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Gillan has portrayed Nebula in the two previous Guardians of the Galaxy films, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
Speaking with Variety on The Big Ticket podcast, Gillan commented on Gunn's return to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, noting just how personal the Guardians films are for Gunn. "His personality, the tone of those movies, I can only describe as James' personality," Gillan said. "It's his sense of humor, his writing, his taste in music. These characters are extensions of him. It's a really personal project for him. It definitely wouldn't have been the same version of Guardians."
Gunn's return to close out the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy has been met with support from his peers at Marvel, with the stars of the films and his fellow directors, including the Russo brothers, reacting positively to his rehiring. Gunn was fired from the film in July of last year after some offensive years-old tweets resurfaced.
Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 does not currently have a release date. The film is reportedly scheduled to begin production in February 2021.
