Once he finishes work on the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) movie The Suicide Squad, writer/director James Gunn will turn his attention to the long-awaited Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The project has taken longer than expected to come to fruition, but not much has changed since the original plans for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 were put into action."No very little," Gunn said on Twitter in response to a question of if Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 had changed since he was briefly fired from the project. Another tweet from Gunn confirmed that the "Script is written and most of the production heads have been hired."RELATED: Peacemaker: John Cena, James Gunn Series' Working Title Revealed

During the summer of 2018, Gunn was fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after offensive tweets he made regarding rape and pedophilia several years prior were uncovered by right-wing detractors. Alan Horn, the chairman of Walt Disney Studios, stated that the "offensive attitudes and statements" found on Gunn's Twitter account were "indefensible and inconsistent" with Disney's values. Gunn would later return to Marvel in early 2019 after apologizing and meeting with Horn, though Gunn will finish work on The Suicide Squad before helming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 currently has no release date. The film is expected to begin production in February 2021.
