A premiere of that magnitude would eclipse that of the first "Guardians of the Galaxy," which opened domestically in 2014 with $94.3 million, setting a new record for an August debut -- only to be unseated last year by Warner Bros.' "Suicide Squad." "Guardians" went on the earn more than $773 million worldwide.

Deadline reports that total awareness for the Marvel Studios sequel has reached a staggering 88 percent, with 63 percent of respondents saying they have "definite interest" in the film.

Arriving in theaters May 5, the sequel picks up just months after the events of Marvel Studios’ 2014 hit, the sequel follows the Guardians of the Galaxy as they travel throughout the cosmos and struggle to keep their newfound family together, all while helping Peter Quill learn more about his true parentage.
