WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy #13 by Al Ewing, Juan Frigeri, Federico Blee, and VC's Cory Petit, on sale now.

As their ranks swell to include most of Marvel's notable cosmic heroes, the Guardians of the Galaxy have split up to tackle two very different threats on two very different battlefronts. While the main team handles an invading force of eons-old cosmic demigods, the away squad is investigating a recently discovered rim world and a missing team of explorers in Guardians of the Galaxy #13. While all the Guardians are capable of handling themselves, the tensions between two members hint at some serious issues as one of the Guardians' leaders has just made it clear that she has no respect for one of the team's most valuable members.

The away team consists of Drax the Destroyer, Marvel Boy, Phyla-Vell and Quasar. With his incredible sense of smell, Drax leads the others through the alien terrain into a clearing that is lined with charred corpses impaled on tall wooden spikes and strange Skrull markings. Knowing that the cult has killed the original survey team and that discretion will be key from this point forward, Phyla asks for Wendell Vaugh, the current Quasar, to summon the help of his other half, Avril Kincaid. Phyla says she wants Kincaid so that the mission can be given a S.H.I.E.L.D. spy's touch, but in reality, her words have said far more than that.

Wendell and Avril are both the current Quasar, and they both share the same body, or at least their bodies share the same space in the universe. Much like Rick Jones during his time as Captain Marvel, or Thor and Donald Blake, Wendell and Avril are connected to one another on a level far beyond anything most could comprehend.

Through the power of the Quantum Bands, Wendell and Avril are able to trade places with one another. While one of them exists in our dimension, the other is whisked away to the farthest reaches of space until the Quantum Bands are struck against each other once more. If Phyla really needed Avril's expertise, asking Wendell to trade places with her wouldn't have struck the chord it did, but with their shared past and Phyla's tone, the only way anyone could have taken it was as a slight.

Avril might have been a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, but so was Wendell. On top of that, Wendell was the chief of security for Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. during his time there, a notch on his belt that Phyla-Vell is aware of. Phyla was even Wendell's successor for a time, taking up the role of Quasar during Annihilation, something that left a sour taste in her mouth regarding the former Protector of the Universe.

Avril has any particular skills that Wendell doesn't, but it seems clear that Phyla just doesn't like Wendell very much, and will take any opportunity she can get to remind him of that fact while putting some distance between the two of them. This hasn't yet led these two to come to blows, but it is certainly driving a wedge into the team that could cause some serious problems down the line if it isn't dealt with soon, especially with the team poised to face a Skrull death cult.
