Fans eagerly anticipating the first look at James Gunn's next big-screen adventure will be disappointed to learn that a trailer for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 might not arrive this year. While no official premiere date for the film's first trailer has been set, a recent tweet from director Gunn seems to suggest Vol. 3 may still be a ways away from revealing footage. Responding to a fan on Twitter who tweeted at Gunn, "Describe the [Guardians of the Galaxy] Vol. 3 Trailer in 2022 in one word," the director simply wrote, "Nonexistent." Gunn's single-word response is far from a definitive statement, however, as the director has been known to play coy with fans over social media in the past.RELATED: Stallone Hypes Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Return With a New Costume Debut

There has been no indication as of late whether the film has experienced any production delays, with Gunn sharing an update on Vol. 3's filming schedule several months back, which confirmed Vol. 3 remained on track to meet its targeted May 2023 release date. In the meantime, the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special currently retains its December 2022 premiere date, though it remains unknown when a trailer for that project will be shared as well.

When Vol. 3 finally debuts its first look, however, the trailer could feature the High Evolutionary -- a geneticist who is rumored to be not only the film's primary antagonist but someone who experimented on Rocket. The rumor is supported by comments Gunn made in 2020, which stated, "I'll just say Rocket is a big part of what's happening in the future - and a lot of this stuff (like the scars we're about to see on his back) sets up what I’ve been planning for Rocket all along."

One theory that has been debunked, though, is Galactus being set up for a future film after one fan spotted a frame from the original 2014 Guardians of the Galaxy film which seemingly resembles a panel of the world-eater being born in the comics. "No. Marvel didn't have the rights to Galactus in 2014," Gunn tweeted in response to the fan. "Just another example of comic book pareidolia -- in the millions & millions of comic book panels that exist & the millions & millions of shots in films there is bound to be an enormous amount of coincidental overlap."

Just because Galactus might not be rearing his planet-sized head in Vol. 3 doesn't mean the next Guardians movie will be lacking in characters, however. Gunn confirmed late last year that "dozens of roles have been cast in [Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3]." Since then, both Will Poulter and Chukwudi Iwuji have been cast for the film. Though Iwuji's role is being kept under wraps, fans can expect to see Poulter playing the powerful Adam Warlock when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 lands in theaters May 5, 2023.
