Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 may still be several years away from its theatrical release, but writer/director James Gunn is still managing to keep fans updated on the upcoming film's progress.

Gunn confirmed on Twitter that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has currently yet to begin filming, though noted, "we are pretty close." The director also emphasized that Vol. 3 is still on track to meet its targeted May 2023 release date despite the recent delays a number of other films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe recently incurred.

As for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, Gunn assured fans that it will be filmed alongside Vol. 3 and remains scheduled to release in December 2022. Gunn and his team have, however, begun recording for the upcoming Cosmic Rewind attraction, which is set to open at the Epcot theme park sometime in 2022.

With filming for Vol.3 approaching, Gunn was asked whether the script for the film or any of its storylines were impacted by his firing by Disney over old Tweets in 2018 and subsequent rehiring a year later. The director replied that it "hasn't changed due to any of that," while mentioning in a separate response, "Every movie I've ever released as a director has been the Gunn cut. I've been fortunate enough to never have a studio interfere in the creative process."

The plot for the upcoming threequel is currently unknown, but what is known is that actor Will Poulter has been cast in the role of Adam Warlock for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The film will mark the first-ever live-action appearance of the powerful cosmic being, with Gunn saying of the casting, "As you guys know I often strike down false rumors, so... um... Welcome to the Guardians family, Will Poulter. He's an amazing actor and wonderful guy. See you in a couple weeks."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 will see the return of Marvel's intergalactic ragtag team, as Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel are all set to reprise their roles of Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Groot, respectively.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 releases in theaters May 5, 2023.
