Star-Lord Had a Different Ride in Early Guardians of the Galaxy Concept Art

Marvel Studios' Charlie Wen reveals alternate concept art and an alternate vehicle for Star-Lord from Guardians of the Galaxy.

Marvel Studios concept artist Charlie Wen has revealed early sketches for Guardians of the Galaxy, which included a radically different version of Star-Lord's ride.

Although Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige discussed Guardians of the Galaxy at Comic-Con International 2010, James Gunn's unconventional movie was officially announced at 2012's convention with some impressive artwork. Now, Wen is showing the alternative version of what fans could've seen.

Wen revealed the concept art that was shown at Comic-Con (bottom image) and the version that included Star-Lord's speeder. Featuring more action than the image that was used for the announcement, Wen's artwork shows the roster of rogues riding into battle with Star-Lord astride his new vehicle.

Fans were quick to point out which image they preferred, with Wen telling one follower that he'd wanted to pick the top artwork. "I like that one better as an image as well," he wrote. "But I think as a first announcement image, the bottom one was more traditionally heroic- and safer since we were already having an uphill battle by having a raccoon and a tree in the team."

Wen's new artwork contains a much larger version of Groot, with his branches extended, and Gamora sporting a cloak. When it came to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, concept artist Andy Park also toyed with giving Gamora a more comic book-accurate look.

Co-founder of Marvel Studios' visual development department, Wen only recently revealed a rejected costume idea for Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye and a wacky first concept for Tom Hiddleston's Loki.
