"I am Groot." No wiser words can be said about everyone’s favorite Guardian of the Galaxy. As Rocket says, “He don’t know talking good like me and you. So, his vocabulistics is limited to ‘I’ and ‘am’ and ‘Groot.'" But Groot is so much more than three simple words.

Groot possesses human-level intellect, and his species, Flora colossus, is known for its hardy tree-like physiology. Groot’s lives are full of extraordinary losses only outweighed by galaxy-saving successes.

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1, Groot and Rocket found themselves teaming up with Peter Quill and Gamora following their skirmish on Xandar and subsequent capture by the Nova Corps. In the line-up, the Nova Corps reveal Groot “has been traveling recently as [Rocket Racoon's] personal houseplant/muscle.”

Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket, and Groot are sent to the Kyln prison where they continue bickering. Groot kept trying to interject his opinion, but was brushed off by Peter’s lack of understanding. As they reached the prison's general population, the biggest inmate approached Star-Lord until Groot asserted his authority to protect his new partner in crime.

Groot ignored the part about removing the emergency lockdown as the final step, and the plan was forced into motion as Drax looks on. A Watchtower Guard threatens Groot with open fire unless he drops the emergency lockdown device, to which Groot responds, “I am Groot.” Classic Groot. However, the team is successful thanks to the hasty methods of the beloved tree.

8 Groot Branches Out With Enforcement Methods

Groot Punctures Kree Soldiers On Dark Aster MCU

There’s a good reason Rocket chose Groot to traverse the galaxy collecting bounties with. With Rocket’s brains and Groot’s brawn, the two make an exceptional team. While Rocket utilizes his intellect to build weapons and explosives, Groot’s physiology allows him to manipulate his branches to take down enemies.

Groot was able to subdue Peter Quill and Gamora using his extendable branches and towering stature. From puncturing Kree soldiers on the Dark Aster in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 to skewering Thanos’ mindless Outriders during the Battle of Wakanda in Infinity War, Groot is merciless.

In their first official team-up at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1, Groot and the squad moved to save Xandar from destruction by the hands of Ronan the Accuser. The Ravagers and Nova Corps worked to prevent Ronan’s ship The Dark Aster from firing upon the peaceful planet.

The Guardians boarded the ship to stop the Kree radical armed with the Power Stone. The Dark Aster was damaged and began plummeting to Xandar with the Guardians still on board. In a tremendous act of self-sacrifice, Groot uttered the words “we are Groot” and sacrificed himself for his new family.

6 Groot Is Re-Planted

Groot Tricks Drax After He's Replanted

As Groot surrounded the Guardians aboard the Dark Aster with his branches, Rocket was worried he wouldn't survive the descent. Rocket’s concern for his friend, partner, and confidant was one of the most tear-jerking moments in the history of the MCU at that time.

After a heroic sacrifice for his friends, Groot’s twigs and branches are spread across the ground. His selflessness paved the way for the defeat of Ronan the Accuser after a dance-off distracted the Kree leader. Rocket was mourning his friend, but by the mid-credit scene, Groot was re-planted into a pot, alive and well.

The only one small enough to enter the core and place the explosives is Baby Groot. Rocket gives the young sprout instructions on which buttons to push and when to push them, but Baby Groot doesn’t understand. He's a baby, but nevertheless runs off with the detonator. Thankfully, Groot pushes the right button that triggers the end of Ego's reign.

4 Groot Gets A Handle On Stormbreaker

Groot in Infinity War.

Throughout Avengers: Infinity War, Teen Groot’s face is planted in his video game, un-phased by the life-threatening events unfolding around him. In a desperate effort to defeat Thanos, Groot and Rocket accompany Thor on a mission to Nidavellir so the Dwarves can build a new weapon powerful enough to defeat the Mad Titan.

Thor risks his life to melt the Uru: the metal used to forge his hammer, Mjolnir. But the last Dwarf Eitri cannot find the handle to the axe, Stormbreaker. Teen Groot forgets his game, extends his sentient branches, and creates a beautifully unique handle, making Groot part of Stormbreaker. Groot gives Thor the ultimate weapon against the Infinity Gauntlet.

3 Groot Grows Up

Thor Groot and Rocket Attack Outriders in Infinity War

No one’s had a character arc quite like Groot. Following his incredible sacrifice in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1, we see Groot transform from a potted sprout into an aggressive baby. During the mid-credits scene, Teen Groot behaves like a typical adolescent who doesn’t listen to the grown-ups.

Avengers: Infinity War kicks off with Teen Groot and his foul mouth and bad attitude. But after he saves Thor by creating Stormbreaker’s handle, Groot’s demeanor changes. He becomes the selfless hero audiences first saw in the first Guardians of the Galaxy – willing to work as a valuable team member.

2 Groot Spreads His Cultural Awareness

Goot Curses At Peter In Infinity War

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is already filled with an array of planets and cultures. Getting to know all of them would take extreme dedication and a Doctor Strange-level photographic memory. And Groot was able to break those barriers to share the language of his rare species.

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1, the only one who seems to understand Groot’s nuanced language is Rocket, despite everything he says sounding like "I Am Groot." In truth, Groot’s language takes a complex comprehension of sound and dialect. By the start of Avengers: Infinity War, all the Guardians are able to understand Groot’s foul mouth.
