Wing Family Gremlins

Fong Wing is Sam's mother and is a doctor of Chinese medicine. She is described as "resourceful, slyly funny, and fiercely protective of her family," and as a mother, she will do anything to aid and protect her son. Sam, on the other hand, is described as a "naïve 10-year-old boy who will one day become Mr. Wing, the mysterious shopkeep and Gizmo's guardian in the original Gremlins films."

Hon Wing is Sam’s father. According to the official description, he has "never believed his father-in-law’s tales of magic and adventure. But when he and Fong become separated from Sam, he realizes the world is stranger than he thought, and that he'll need to become braver to reunite his family." Finally, Grandpa is described as "a free spirit and self-proclaimed expert in Chinese myth and magic." He claims to have traveled the world, though nobody believes him. That changes when during the events of the series. Curiously, HBO Max's description reveals, "He alone knows the true power (and secrets) of the Mogwai and the importance of protecting them."

The series does not yet have a release date, but it was previously reported the first episode will debut at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. The news arrived alongside the show's first official still, featuring an animated Gremlin and the series' Chinese setting.

Gremlins introduced the furry creatures to the screen in 1984. Referred to as "mogwai," the Cantonese word for "Demon," the creatures are shown to be unable to tolerate sunlight and water. The sun causes them to die and water causes them to spawn. If they are fed after midnight, they turn into evil reptile-like monsters called gremlins. The film was a critical and financial success, resulting in a sequel, The New Batch, which was released in 1990.

Much of the plot will center on Sam, a teenage street thief named Elle, and Gizmo, as Sam tries to take the mogwai home. HBO Max teases battles against "colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore," and explains that "Along their quest, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins."
