“I would love to do it," Columbus said, referring to his plans for a third film. "I wrote a script, so there is an existing script," he continued. "We’re working out some rights issues right now, so we’re just trying to figure out when the best time to make that film would be. I would still do it the same way – I would do it as tangible puppets, not CGI. Maybe having — you know we had one stop-motion scene in the first Gremlins, but I don’t think I’d use much CGI."

In 2019, Warner Bros. gathered the trademark rights for Gremlins and its franchise, which led them to quickly announce an animated, television adaptation of the famous mogwai tale titled, Gremlins: Secrets of the MogwaiUnlike the prior films, the series will dive into the mythology behind the mogwai and the world that they inhabit within '20s China.

Director Joe Dante -- who directed the 1984's Gremlins -- previously voiced praise of the upcoming animated series. He added that he thinks, "this is a great way to sort of get the franchise back on people's minds." Dante will serve as a consulting producer on the series as well. So far, there is no other news to prior cast members or affiliate creatives of the franchise returning for the animated series. Although, it was confirmed that Gizmo will no longer be voiced by Howie Mandel.

Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai will follow Mr. Wing -- the owner of the shop where Billy's father first meets Gizmo in Gremlins -- as a 10-year-old boy in 1920's China. The show will follow young Wing as he meets the mogwai for the first time and their adventures together.

The series is written and executive produced by Tse Chun and produced by Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey, Sam Register and Brendan Hay. No casting announcements have been made at the time of this writing. The series will be available exclusively on HBO Max in 2021. The first season will consist of 10 half-hour episodes.
