Comics writer and real-life superhero David Gallaher, who previously wrote for DC's Green Lantern Corps, was assaulted after defending a young girl being attacked in New York City. A GoFundMe page has since been set up to help cover the cost of Gallaher's injuries.

According to the New York Daily News, Gallaher was walking through Brooklyn on March 4 when he witnessed a group of teenagers crowd a girl who looked to be around 13. The group began pushing the girl's face into a car window, at which point Gallaher pulled out his phone to call 911. "The two of the kids came up to me, and were threatening to punch me, threatening to hurt me," he said.

The two teenagers stepped away from Gallaher for a moment, at which point Gallaher again took out his phone -- an act that angered one of them so much that he punched Gallaher in the face. A garbage can and paving stone was also thrown at Gallaher in the following moments. "It's weird to me — that was just for calling 911," Gallaher said. "Imagine had it been like me punching somebody, or imagine it being an actual fight. I got assaulted just for trying to help somebody in a very non-aggressive way."

Despite the injuries, Gallaher said he would intervene again should he see something similar in the future. "I think that at the end of the day, it's our responsibility as people, and certainly as New Yorkers, to step in and do what we can when people can't fight for themselves," he said.

Gallaher has since set up a GoFundMe to help cover his medical bills from the assault. As of Wednesday afternoon, the page has raised over $5,500. "I was hospitalized at New York Methodist in Brooklyn with a broken cheekbone and kidney damage," Gallaher posted. "While health insurance was able to cover the initial ER costs -- the cost of imaging, including MRI, X-Ray, and CT Scan adds up, as does the aftercare. I am asking for a little bit of help to get me through the end of the month to cover medical bills, lost week of work, and subsequent court costs."

"Fortunately, there was a video of the incident and the suspects were arrested hours after the assault," he continued. "I have been been working with the DA and other groups to bring a degree of restorative justice to the case. My hope is that some good will come out of this harrowing event and that justice will be served."

Along with working on Green Lantern Corps during DC's "Convergence" storyline, Gallaher's writing contributions include High MoonThe Only Living BoyThe Only Living GirlBox 13, Darkstar & the Winter GuardDeadlandsHulk: Winter Guard and more.
