WARNING: The following contains spoilers for DC vs. Vampires #3, on sale now from DC Comics.

Wonder Woman's Lasso of Truth is one of the most powerful items in the DC Universe. Time and time again it has been responsible for some remarkable feats. It's not only capable of binding some of the most powerful beings Diana has come up against, but its ability to compel anyone to tell the truth has been a great asset on its own. It's been used to uncover deadly plots, change hearts and minds, and even uncover truths that Diana didn't know about herself. However, one other powerful DC item can counter Wonder Woman's incomparable Lasso - and it may have just doomed the world.

Hal Jordan has been turned into a vampire and the heroes of the DC Universe have slowly come closer to the truth in DC vs. Vampires #3 (by James Tynion IV, Matthew Rosenberg, Otto Schmidt and Tom Napolitano). Barry Allen found out too late and was killed by Green Lantern, but Wonder Woman had the chance to stop him in this issue. With the vampiric Hal bound in her lasso, she learned the truth about her teammate's fate and the plot of the vampires. Although it looked like the Justice League finally knew how to fight back, one of Green Lantern's hidden powers doomed Diana and possibly the world.

Still bound, Hal told Diana to look into his eyes, all while he explained how wonderful it was to be "on the other side of life." Wonder Woman couldn't believe what he was saying, or that she was believing it. After all, he was bound by the Lasso of Truth, and therefore, everything he was telling her had to be the truth. As he seduced the Amazon, he explained exactly how he was able to bypass the power of the lasso. Although vampires are known for having hypnotic powers, one of the lesser-known facts about a Green Lantern's ring is that it has the ability to hypnotize others, as Hal demonstrates here.

As Hal explains, hypnosis isn't lying, it's simply a way of speaking to her vulnerability. From a certain point of view, the Lasso of Truth makes its user weaker. As the user has to hold it to use it, they too are subjected to its abilities and must tell the truth. This also makes them vulnerable to the truth. As Hal used hypnosis to bypass the lasso's abilities, it made Diana vulnerable to anything that could be considered "true." As she can't lie to herself during the Lantern's mental assault, she is completely open to everything he's telling her and therefore can't help but to give in.

Not only is hypnosis a viable counter to the Lasso of Truth then, but so is anything considered "the truth" to those bound by it. Although it's capable of making others see the real truth, that won't work if those exposed to it truly believe what they're saying, as is the case with Hal here. He believes that his life is better as a vampire and the lasso convinced Diana of that too.

This loophole has caused some issues before. In the recent Wonder Woman: Black and Gold story "A Lesson in Truth" (by Michael W. Conrad, Noah Bailey and Pat Brosseau), a troubled man believed the lasso couldn't actually compel people to tell the truth, and for good reason. When the man's father was bound by it, he said that his son would change the world and be a hero. Because it never happened, he believed it was a lie. As Wonder Woman explained, his father believed what he said, and therefore, to him, it was the truth. That's exactly what happened with Hal here.

Hal remarks that both he and Wonder Woman use their powerful tools as crutches. Even though they both have mastery over them, they're perhaps too reliant on them. In this case, it doomed Diana and gave the vampires a powerful ally in their mission to take over the world. Although hypnosis is a frightening enough counter to Diana's immeasurable power, what counts as "the truth" turns out to be even worse than that.
